Does anyone else feel like it costs $50 just to leave the house anymore? I’m definitely a homebody and part of the reason is because every time I leave my house I almost always spend money. From browsing the bookstore to going out to eat, there is no shortage of opportunities to lighten my bank account every time I get in my car.

But it’s summer, and even though I love being comfy in my own home, I don’t want to spend my whole summer stuck at home for the sake of being financially responsible. Here are four places you can go that cost nothing.

1. Parks / Dog parks

My number one favorite place to go when I need some sunshine, fresh air, and socialization is my local dog park. Obviously, my dogs love this one too. I’m fortunate to live near one that is well kept. It’s also a great way to get some human interaction, which I’ve missed since working from home. All it costs me is a little bit of gas in the tank.

If you don’t have a dog, a regular public park is just as rewarding. Many city parks are equipped with walking trails, which is a great way to get some physical activity while enjoying summer.

2. Public libraries

I’d be remiss not to mention one of my favorite public spaces: the public library.

The libraries in my state offer a multitude of free activities, including adult summer reading clubs, maker meet ups, yoga and Tai chi. Stop in, chill out, maybe check out a book or two. The best part is nobody expects a dime.

3. United Service Organizations (USO)

If you are part of an active duty military family and live on or near a base, the USO is a great place to spend some down time at absolutely no cost. Many facilities offer gaming spaces, snacks, computer labs, and events.

The USO is largely supported by donors and volunteers so that the military community can enjoy all it has to offer at no charge.

4. Volunteering

Another great way to spend your summer is by volunteering! This is also an excellent way to meet people with similar values and make an impact on your community. Whatever your interests may be, there is a local organization that would love to have you on their team. Animal shelters, food banks, blood drives, Girl/Boy Scouts, churches, summer camps, veteran’s organizations… the list is endless. Get out of your comfort zone, meet new people and have a meaningful summer experience without it costing you anything.
